APP-ealing to young readers
Chulmleigh English teacher to release a free interactive novel APP to get kids reading
Chulmleigh College English teacher Pat Garrett will release his interactive novel ‘The 8th Continent’ as a free download later this month, to help encourage reluctant young readers. The post-apocalyptic tale allows readers to choose their own path through the story, much like the Fighting Fantasy novels of yore.
“The technology has allowed me to develop the genre considerably,” author and Secondary English teacher Pat Garrett explains, “Readers can manage an inventory of items, play a variety of mini-games, fight baddies, hack electronic locks, scavenge for goodies, and are even rewarded Achievements like those in modern computer games.”
‘The 8th Continent’ has been in development for over three years, and is the first of a trilogy. The interactive novel will be available to download on Google Play and there will be versions for all devices.
“I noticed more and more, students coming into lessons with tablets, Kindles, and smart phones. And I realised something: this is where it’s at. Blending elements of gaming with the interactive story has hopefully made the experience that bit more appealing, even to those who have perhaps got out of the habit of reading for pleasure.”
